The surroundings:
This part of the Provence is not very touristic, it's more agricultural and nature is savage. Olive trees, thyme and rosemary grow on the red soil mixed with stones, exposed to the sun and endure -15C in winternights. The hills are ensuring beautiful hiking tracks with spectacular views. People in this area are very friendly and helpful and, although they don't speak many languages, you will experience that with a smile and some elaborate gestures you'll get what you were hoping for. In restaurants the owner/chef invites you to try out local delicacies and is proud to meet you.

Ofcourse we have a lot of typical Provencal villages with sleepy centres, which turn into lively and most of all, colourfull marketsquares once a week. At that moment you can smell the local goatcheese and buy melons which still taste like melons. During the weekends these villages have their own festivities. F.i. Vinon sur Verdon celebrates the national day of Belgium, which results in wooden tables and benches all around the village where everyone enjoys eating mussles with French fries, singing the Belgium anthem, discuss the quality of each other voices and have a little dance afterwards.

On the other side of the Durance you'll find the Luberon with several nice wine chateaux and some other beautiful villages. A challenging golfcourse with a good restaurant makes another daytrip. The lakes of Esparron (20 min) and Ste. Croix (45 min) are perfect for a swim or a little boat tour and the splendid rockformations of the Gorges du Verdon or Les Mees are breathtaking. Residential Aix en Provence (45 min) where terraces and shops are equally present and some fine museums for a change. Or the chaos of a major city like Marseille, which offers a different atmosphere with the old harbour and it's beautiful coastline with a view on the islands. If you would like to swim in the Mediterrenean sea we recommend Sanary sur Mer, with its morning markets with fresh fish, it's little streets and it's beach where local people don't show up before 16.00 hrs.
